Design Inspiration: Neutrals

Photo Credit: via la belle vie

Why not take design inspiration from fashion and embrace neutral bedding right now?

Neutrals are so hot this spring/summer in the fashion world!! Hello, Cannes! Even though the interior design world has its own trends separate and apart from fashion, these two worlds are beginning to merge more and more (for example, DVF's new home line). Talented fashion designer Peter Som has created a marvelous home line for Sferra ~ including this traditional damask pattern bedding in white and grey. Love this!

Borrow inspiration from fashion when your decorating your own space! Have fun creating your own signature decor. If you are on a tight budget, consider adding some new accent pillows, like the one pictured above, instead of a design overhaul to give your living space a cool natural look by using neutral colors.

Color Palette: Marigold

The color marigold is so fresh for spring! Kirsten Dunst recently wore a beautiful marigold dress by Chloe with Jimmy Choo sandals in Cannes.

Boldly wear a marigold dress, like this asymmetric draped dress, with tan or gold heels for a dressy look. Make the look more casual by sporting brown leather sandals and a slouchy bag.

If you aren't keen on wearing a solid colored marigold dress, go for a dress that includes the color along with other hues.

This Milly stripe dress is preppy with its nautical-inspired stripe, but adds the right amount of punch by including the marigold color. For those of you that are loyal fans of Milly, this dress might be the perfect pick for you!

Wanting to incorporate marigold in the form of accessories? This fantastic carryall is available right now at NM Last Call. The bag is modern and sleek, and its large size will allow for you to carry all the stuff you need. The marigold color will set this bag apart from the pack, and the fact that it is on sale makes it all the more desirable.

And, for all of the shoe-shopaholics out there, show off your summer fashion savvy with these satin wedge espadrilles. Such a subtle way to incorporate marigold into your summer look.

Look for Less: Floral Maxi Dress

Embrace the ease and femininity of a floral maxi dress in the last few weeks of spring. A long floral dress also works all summer long - including on vacation. Eva Mendes looks beautiful in this belted floral Peter Som maxi dress.

Derek Lam recently teamed up with Ebay to offer a small collection of reasonably priced dresses - while the boho floral print maxi dress is sold out already, the shorter version has a laid back cool 70's vibe.

If you were wondering where to get Emma Robert's blue maxi dress from this post, you can buy it here for around $250.

Right now, Neiman Marcus' Last Call has a Free People floral print maxi dress for less than $100. This dress totally works with the black background color of the dress contrasting with the florals - perfect for day or night.

Favor softer colors? Try Free People's v-neck Hinted Floral Maxi Dress in ivory combo. Add a slim light brown leather belt to this dress to accentuate your waist.

Also think about stopping by a vintage store in your area to see if you can discover a floral maxi dress that is your style. Wear a floral maxi dress with flat sandals or a wedge espadrilles (like this pair for around $25!!). Consider adding a belt to your maxi dress to create a well-defined silhouette.

This look is versatile, fun, and looks effortlessly chic. You can wear this pretty much anywhere - that's the beauty of it. Embrace the 70s inspired season of S/S 2011 with your own boho chic floral dress.

Look for Less: Denim Jacket

Good news for those of you who never throw things out of your closet: the jean jacket is back in style!

Reese Witherspoon loves wearing jean jackets. Reese usually wears short casual day dresses, and adds the jean jacket on top as a substitute for a cardigan.

Recently, the uber-stylish Emma Roberts wore her Elizabeth & James jean jacket (at left) with a cool blue printed maxidress. Emma has also worn her jean jacket with skinny black pants and heels. Emma is wearing TEXTILE Elizabeth & James Sid Denim Jacket.

The most important style tips for jean jackets are: 1) don't button the buttons, instead leave it open, and 2) roll up the sleeves to your elbow.

So, pull out that old jean jacket from the back of your closet (aren't you glad you kept it now!!) and wear it over a casual dress ASAP. If you don't already own a jean jacket, there are tons of affordable options.

Spend less than $100 and still look fabulous with this "western style" denim jacket from Topshop.

If you like the look of Emma's light wash jacket, get a similar color jacket that's also budget-friendly. Invest a little more and get this must-have Free People denim jacket, with its adorable two-snap button pockets. Whatever type of jean jacket you wear, remember to rock it with confidence! Style Q&A: How to wear Neon Brights?

Dear Young Sophisticates,
How do I wear neon bright clothing in a fashionable way? What's the best way to style neon clothes and accessories for spring and summer?

Neon brights, like this bright and bold skirt, are fashion's latest fixation. The only thing is you don't want to overdo it and look like you are wearing an over-the-top 80's costume. Solution? Mix neons and neutrals for a modern, sophisticated look.

Pair a neon skirt or shorts, like these neon yellow shorts, with a white top for a chic, fashionable look. Spice up an all neutral ensemble with a bright skinny belt, like this one for under $30. The MaxMara Spring 2011 runway provided the inspiration for this styling tip.

Bored with mixing neutrals and neons? Be daring and add neon brights into a color-blocked ensemble - include a fluorescent pink or neon green piece as part of your color-blocked outfit. For more tips on color blocking, read this. Of course, there are countless other ways to style your neon pieces - tell us, how do you wear neon brights?

Look for Less: Bow Details

A bow adds a sweet, feminine touch to any outfit. Jason Wu featured big, prominent bows in his spring 2011 collection, including in the look pictured on the right. Get the gorgeous Jason Wu tulle bow tie t-shirt in black here.

These bow sandals are so cute and they're only 60 bucks! The blush patent leather sandals would go with so many different spring and summer outfits.

When planning your outfit, I'd recommend wearing only one piece with a bow or bows on it at a time. The result will be a chic, balanced look.

A stunning necklace with two silk bows on it from FENTON/FALLON for J. Crew is breathtaking. It would make for quite a statement necklace!

Like fun and funky bow accessories? A pink bow headband has a vintage vibe that begs to be worn at the beach or for a Saturday in the city.

And, last but not least, this Topshop dress (pictured below) with the black bow on the waist is truly stunning and costs less than $100. This dress is such a deal and completely gorgeous. I love the cream color, the black bow, and just about everything about it!

Look for Less: Cobalt Blue

Wow, talk about bright! Rashida Jones was recently spotted wearing a beautiful cobalt dress at the White House Correspondent's Dinner. Designers like Mulberry and Rachel Roy showed off this bold hue in their spring collections.

When you wear this color, you will most definitely stand out. Style a monochromatic cobalt dress with nude or black heels and simple jewelry, as this color is so vibrant.

The one-of-a-kind draping on this Trina Turk dress will send out a chic, individualist vibe. The elegant draping on this dress is so sophisticated.

And if you want to splurge, this Notte by Marchesa gown is too beautiful not to include in this post.

Not wanting to go all out with a cobalt dress? Then, opt for cobalt colored accessories, like a great pair of cobalt-colored heels, like these satin heels from Kate Spade.

And remember to shop your own closet and give new life to any cobalt pieces that you already own by incorporating into a fresh new look.

Look for Less: Gisele's Met Gala Dress

Gisele stole the show at the Met Gala last night. The Brazilian beauty wore a stunning red Alexander McQueen gown that was originally worn by model Jessica Stam in the Autumn/Winter 2005, "Man Who Knew Too Much" show. And, if you have the chance, go see the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit opening at the Met tomorrow.

Get the look with this BCBG Mariola red strapless evening dress. The dress is a similar color to Gisele's, and the silhouette is elegant. For a slighter darker color, ADAM wrap-effect crepe column gown in scarlet is dramatic and lovely.

For a shorter length red dress, Alice by Temperley Red Tiered Tulip Dress has such a fun and flirty vibe. You can rent it for only $50 at Rent the Runway right now. Enter the YS giveaway for a $150 Rent the Runway gift card; if you win, you could end up wearing the dress for free!!

Get the Look: White Tuxedo Jacket

A well-tailored white tuxedo jacket looks smart and sophisticated. Take a style tip straight off the Balmain runway (pictured below) and wear the jacket unbuttoned, with the sleeves pushed up to the elbow.

Katie Holmes is wearing Stella McCartney Contrast-Lapel Tuxedo Jacket. The jacket is ivory with a black lapels. I love the way she styled the look, with skinny black pants and feminine polka dot heels.

Designers like Balmain and Jason Wu featured the white tuxedo jacket on the spring runway. The Balmain jacket is totally gorgeous. Jason Wu tuxedo blazer is styled with a pair of perfectly tailored shorts - wear together for a look that is totally on trend.

For a more moderately priced designer option, L.A.M.B. Tuxedo Blazer is the top pick for today - it's effortlessly cool, like Gwen Stefani herself.

For a more slouchy, laid back look, this oversized tuxedo jacket is cool.

If you are loving the polka dot heels, these Guiseppe Zanotti heels are fun and have a similar look. For heels around $100, snatch up these Ivanka Trump pretty polka dot pumps.
